Additive manufacturing processes such as LPBF, WAAM, and LMD, are closely followed by EDF. EDF believes that these processes provide a promising solution to the challenges on maintenance of power plants. The challenges include but are not limited to component obsolescence, rapid back-online of power plants, and reduction of stocks and delivery time of spare parts. LMD process has been paid special attention to by EDF because of its characteristics, which enable not only the fabrication of structures with complex geometry but also the repairing of existing components. On the contrary, LMD process is faced with some obstacles before its industrial application, such as the high defect rate and the low surface quality in its product. Numerical simulation has long been recognized by EDF as an effective method to realize quality control and quality improvement of fabrication processes. Validated numerical models allow the understanding of physical phenomena in industrial processes from perspectives unobservable by experiments. Numerical simulation can be an alternative to iterative testing experiments, resulting in substantial savings in the cost. This internship is to inform the future direction of EDF's numerical simulation work for LMD process. Mission: 1.Accomplish a literature review on numerical simulation methods for LMD process during the internship period based on research and former results. 2.(optional) launch demonstrations using EDF’s in-house software (Code_Aster, Code_Saturne, etc.) based on the literature review. Required skills: •Master’s degree candidate or outstanding bachelor’s degree candidate/graduate. •Engineering background on additive manufacturing, material engineering or related. •Fluent (B2 or above) in English and/or French. •Familiar with the use of Microsoft 365 software package (Outlook, OneDrive, Word, PowerPoint, Excel). •Knowledge of Finite Element Method (ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc.), computer programming (Python, C++, etc.).
