职位描述:

Key Responsibilities:

This applied materials position utilizes basic knowledge of materials science and engineering principles and practices to identify and advance material solutions to achieve application, design, analysis, manufacturing and quality requirements. The position works cross-functionally on projects that require material science guidance on topics such as material and process selection, failure analysis, material characterization, and material and process expertise on questions pertaining to manufacturing and quality problems.

Investigates material and material processing problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, actively contributes to problem resolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members.

Applies and supports the improvement of processes such as material and material processing validation, quality auditing, design validation and 7-step problem solving and utilizes the tools and techniques for material characterisation, material testing, non-destructive testing, mechanical and physical properties measurement, simulation and statistical data analysis which are required to enable higher quality decision making.

Obtains input and negotiates with Quality, Supply Chain and Engineering functions and delivers testing/analysis results and consultancy to these functions to enable internal and external customer success.

Makes decisions in the areas of material and material processing selection and optimisation, qualification and inspection that impact product quality, reliability, durability and capability.

Applies and improves material specifications/standards in alignment with requirements, capability and quality needs.

Owns problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with a greater degree of technical complexity and ambiguity over the entry level engineer level and with greater accountability to the project team.

Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes.

Involves minimal direct management of people, but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongst technicians and/or temporary student employees.

Contributes effectively toward team goals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

 

Skills

Component Failure Analysis - Analyzes specimen physical and chemical properties using applicable laboratory equipment to identify failure mode and mechanism; evaluates design intent, manufacturing, processing in accordance with established processes and operational history, print requirements, part function and failure mode to determine root cause(s); recommends corrective actions considering material limitations and manufacturing constraints to protect the customer and prevent reoccurrence.

Component Material and Process Selection - Evaluates component requirements regarding form and function in order to identify base material and processing options; selects manufacturing route and selects material and process based on best-fit option(s) aligned to requirements; validates selected material and process by defining necessary test plan to prove capability to requirements.

Applies Principles of Tribology  - Proposes material couples, surface textures, lubrication and cleanliness requirements needed to prevent adhesive or abrasive wear in order to optimize wear resistant characteristics in a variety of environments; chooses dissimilar material couples or coatings/lubricants that eliminate base metal contact with propensity to cold weld and prevent galling; selects material hardness, surface texture and minimum lubrication considering rolling/sliding contact fatigue requirements to prevent spalling.

Non Destructive Evaluation - Interprets the results of standard test methods to identify non-conforming indications against approved acceptance criteria to inspect components; develops new test methods or probes to detect features of interest when existing methods are inadequate to successfully assess the material and/or geometry to solve problems; identifies emerging inspection technologies considering detection limits, equipment cost, and processing speed to improve inspection effectiveness.

Material Characterization - Interprets mechanical, chemical, microstructural and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirm compliance to print, and correlates these properties with field or component test results to determine robustness; defines appropriate material characterization schedule using correct laboratory equipment to ensure requirements are met.

 

Joining and Bonding Science - Chooses appropriate bonding technique considering material type(s), applied loads and available bonding area to generate a durable bonded joint; develops process and inspection specifications taking base materials, bonding materials and bonding equipment into account to ensure sufficient and consistent quality; applied to multi-functional components to establish a spatially efficient joint that doesn't require disassembly.

Applies Principles of Surface Engineering - Applies material surface modification techniques to increase the load bearing capability of components; modifies the surface chemistry and mechanical properties to improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance in a variety of chemical and thermal environments; utilizes thermal treatments, surface diffusion treatments, or hard coatings to increase surface hardness, strength, and compatibility with mating components in a variety of environments.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required.

 

Experience

Prior entry level engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred
